Exploring the Self through the Lens:

the Use of Self-Portraits and Selfies in Psychotherapy

Workshop Online (on the ZOOM platform), both in Italian and English.

Instructor: Francesca Belgiojoso

Nine hours of training, divided into three modules of three hours each.

A course that provides an opportunity to explore the therapeutic potential of self-portraits and selfies, allowing for a deeper understanding of oneself through one’s photographs and offering clinical supervision on the use of these expressive forms.

Workshop structure

First module

In the first module dedicated to theory, we will explore the history and psychodynamics of photographic self-portraits. We will delve into their meaning and their relationship with the author’s identity. Through practical exercises, participants will reflect on various self-images.

Second module

In the second module, we will address the role of self-portraits and selfies in the construction of identity and self-expression. Participants will engage, both theoretically and practically, with the motivations and psychological dynamics that drive people to take self-portraits and selfies.

Third module

In the third module, we will examine the clinical applications of self-portraits and selfies in psychotherapy. We will understand how they can be used as therapeutic tools to explore emotions, reflect on identity, and work on specific issues such as self-esteem and body image. Clinical case examples and therapeutic approaches that integrate the use of self-portraits and selfies will be presented. Participants will have the opportunity to work with their self-portraits through role-play and discussions.

In the final session, we will reflect on the journey of each participant, offering a moment of synthesis and integration of what has been learned during the course.

A brief theoretical and practical journey that represents a unique opportunity for psychotherapists interested in understanding and experiencing the therapeutic potential of self-portraits, learning through targeted supervision to apply it in a clinical context.
